Advent

We are now in the second week of Advent.

Today we made our class wreath to remind us that Jesus is coming. The class wreath will hold five candles; three purple, one pink and one white.

The candles represent light and Jesus, who is the light of the world.
The purple candles are for royalty and penance.
The pink candle is for joy.
The white candle is for Jesus.

To make our wreath first we traced around our hands on all different types of green cardboard and paper.



We then cut them out and stapled them together to make a circle.

Lastly we added some glitter glue.

The colour green is the colour of life and hope.

The circle has no beginning or end. It reminds us of God, who had no beginning or end.

Walk like an Egyptian...

Hello,

We are writing from Egypt.

Here are some quick facts that we have learnt already....

• Egypt is in the North-east of Africa.
• The Capital is Cairo.
• The flag is red,white,black and has a golden eagle holding a shield in the middle.
• The River Nile flows through Egypt. Without it Egypt would just be a desert.
• Egypt is divided into Upper Egypt and Lower Egypt.
• In Lower Egypt there are low mountains and desert. In Upper Egypt there are valleys and desert.
• Lots of animals live in Egypt - cheetahs, hyenas, crocodiles and cobras.
• Many Egyptians are Muslim. They follow the Islam religion.
• Children help their families on farms. They also help their parents when they get old.
• They speak Arabic.
• They use the Egyptian pound.
• Hunters and fishermen were the first people to live on the banks of the Nile. They grew crops, cared for their animals and built villages.
• Egypt was ran by kings, which were called Pharaoh. They built huge temples and pyramids.

Year 3A are special!

This week we have been talking about what makes us so special.

Zoe is special because she is kind.
Hailey is special because she is a fast runner.
George is special because he is fantastic on the computer.
Oscar is special because he is a great cook.
Jackson is special because he has a nice smile.
Arron is special because he is funny and tough.
Sommer is special because she is really good at planning things.
Maddie is special because she is a good friend to others.
Monique is special because she is a fabulous singer and dancer.
Angelica is special because she can put on different voices for characters.
Amy is special because she has lovely hair.
Dakota is special because she is pretty and has a great voice.
Kendal is special because she always helps her friends out.
Emerson is special because she is awesome and funny.
Jack is special because he is clever.
John is special because he is hilarious.
Ethan is special becaue he is always including others.
Anika is special because she is pretty and makes us laugh.
Caitlin is special because she is a super fast runner.
Nicholas is special because he is very flexible.
Yannick is special because he is a very happy and cheerful person.
Nicolas is special because he has a great personality.
Jordan is special because he is good on the scooter.
William is special because he is funny and intelligent.
Kiah is special because she is a wonderful friend.

We are all special in so many different ways!

Super busy week 6!

We have been very busy, however, we have not forgotten about our blog.


This week we travelled to India.


The Indian flag is green, white, orange and navy blue. We learnt all about why they have used these colours. Did you know the Indian flag was adopted in 1947 when they became independent from Great Britain.


India is in South Asia. It is in between China, Pakistan and Nepal. The capital city is New Delhi.


India is the seventh largest country in the world.


There are two main religions in India. They are Hinduism and Muslim. There are other religions there like Christians and Buddhists.


The Taj Mahal is a well known building that is thought to be the most beautiful in the world. It was built in Agra, by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. It is a symbol of eternal love.


On Tuesday we were given a map on India. We had to read the instructions to label the cities, countries and mountains on the map. We had to carefully read the instructions and make sure we knew our directions, north, south, east and west.


We spent some time yesterday making some Rangoli artwork with Mrs W. It is a traditional type of artwork that people in India do. It took us a while to make them, but they look fantastic.

Christmas is coming around quickly. We have our school concert in just over a week. We have been busy practising. Today we have a whole school practice. We hope we do well.

We best get going, plenty of work to do.

Delicious Day in Italy!

Ciao!

Today we have been very busy master chefs! We have made pizza and spaghetti bolognese.

We thought they both tasted delicious! We had a vote on which one we liked the most.
There are 28 people here today.

To make the spaghetti bolognese we first had to boil some water. Once the water was boiling we added dry spaghetti. While the spaghetti was cooking we used an electric frying pan to fry some garlic and onion. We also added mushrooms, capsicum and grated carrot. Once these were soft we added beef mince. We waited for the mince to go brown and then we added tomatos, tomato paste and herbs. We left this to simmer for around 20 minutes then added the spaghetti. We made a mess of our faces eating it, but it was just so yummy!

To make the pizzas we used english muffins, tomato paste, pepperoni, shredded ham, diced capsicum, chopped mushrooms, diced onion, tinned pineapple and shredded mozzarella cheese.

We had to cut the english muffin in half and spread it with tomato paste. We placed and sprinkled the toppings we wanted on top of the english muffin. We cooked them for 15-20 minutes. The cheese on top melted. Some of us had all the toppings and most had just a few. Our classroom smelt like a restaurant. Maybe one day we will open our very own restaurant! What cuisine do you think we should open?

Yesterday we had a very special visitor come to visit us to talk to us all about Italy. He didn't have to travel far because he is our Principal, Mr G. Mr G's parents are from Italy.
We learnt lots of Italian words. Did you know Mr G is Jack's Papa?
Mr G showed us some of the places he had visited in Italy.
We found it very interesting!!

It's time to go. It is almost lunchtime. We are still full from our delicious Italian feast, but we are sure we will find room in our tummy's for our treats in our lunchboxes from our parents.

Buongiorno!

We are writing from Italy!

We have just arrived today because yesterday our flight was cancelled due to Miss A, our flight attendant being sick.

What we have learnt so far...

• The capital city of Italy is Rome.
• The flag is green, white and red.
• Some of their well known foods are pasta and pizza.
• There are many great artists and inventors from Italy.
• The Colosseum is a well known famous attraction in Rome.
• In Venice they travel by gondoliors, which are like canoes that travel on water.
• Their currency is Euro.
• They speak Italian.
• At the moment Italy is in financial crisis.
• Italy is shaped like a boot.

We have also learnt how to count to ten!

Later in the week, perhaps we can record it for you. We need some practise!

We best get going as we have plenty of work to do while we are here and would love to find some time to cook and eat some Italian food!!

French Toast

Today we made French Toast.

It was very simple to make. We used eggs, milk, pepper and bread. It tasted scrumptious! Some of us have made it before, but for some of us it was the first time. We think we could make it at home for our parents and brothers and sisters. We think they would enjoy it just as much as us.

We are busy now writing the procedure for how we made it.

Remembrance Day

Today is Remembrance Day.

This morning we went to a lovely service held by the Year 4D class.

We have spent some time thinking about Remembrance Day and why today is Remembrance Day.

Fun times to be had in...France!

Bonjour!

We are writing from France. Today we boarded our plane and got to try some croissant on the way. We all loved it and even had seconds.

What we know about France already...

• The flag in blue, white and red.
• The capital city of France is Paris.
• France is in Europe.
• Their currency is Euro.
• It has the highest mountain in Europe, called Mount Blanc.
• In most parts of France they have cool winters and mild summers.
• More than 300 different types of cheeses are made in France.
• France is famous for the Eifel Tower, the Louvre and the Tour de France.

We have also looked at some songs in French, Alouette and Frere Jacques. We tried singing a number song too, but we think the Japanese version might have been easier.  

In maths today we played some fun games to help us with our money, time and fraction concepts. We have been busy learning about all of these things over the past few weeks so it was great to use what we have learnt in a game.

We have library this afternoon so we will have to update you some other time on what exciting things we do.

A busy week 3 in Mexico!

We had a very busy and awesome week in Mexico.


We spent the week learning lots about Mexico and on Friday we got to cook delicious tacos.


We worked in small groups with Miss A to cook and prepare the ingredients.
The ingredients we used was mince, onion, carrot, lettuce, cheese, taco seasoning, water and corn taco shells.


We had to cook the meat and onion in a pan. When the meat was brown we added the taco seasoning and water. Meanwhile, we grated cheese and carrot and shredded some lettuce. We placed the corn taco shells in the oven until they were warm. Once they were ready we got to fill our shells with meat, carrot, cheese and lettuce. They were very yummy. We are all very clever little chefs!

During the week we revised how to use commas and question marks.  To help us remember we had to put sentences together as a group and place the commas and question marks where they should go.

In Maths last week we looked at time. We have been getting an understanding of seconds and minutes. As a class last week we had to do several exercises and time our heart rate after. We found it hard to count it after some exercises because it was going so fast!

Did you know there are 60 seconds in a minute? Did you know there are 60 minutes in an hour? We are so smart that we have worked out that there are 3600 seconds in an hour!!



On Friday it was our turn to have our Prayer Assembly. We sent a message to other students in our school to help others less fortunate than ourselves. We sang two songs - Rainbow and True Colours. When we sang true colours we also did some sign language. Some of us found it easy to learn and some of us found it challenging. Miss A thinks we did a marvellous job!

We are finishing up in Mexico today and looking forward to our next destination.

Magical Music & Melbourne Cup Madness!

This morning we went to watch and listen to Jonas from Africa with his instruments. He played lots and lots of different beats on so many different types of African instruments. He also sang along and told us some stories from Africa. Jordan and Arron from our class were especially lucky because they got to go up and play some instruments with Jonas. Our favourite instrument was the  Djimbe (it's an African Drum). He loves playing music because it makes him feel happy and want to dance.


Today is Melbourne Cup Day. It is when there is a big horse racing event held in Melbourne. At school we got to make a hat to wear to our 'Mission Madness' hat parade. We all donated a gold coin to raise money for the missions. It feels good to help other people, especially the Indigenous community in Northern Territory. The whole school looked amazing with all their different hat creations. It was fun parading around for everyone to see and even more exciting watching the horses race.

We love Melbourne Cup madness!

Mexico Madness

Olah (that means hello in Spanish).


Week 3 is here already and today we set flight to... MEXICO!
We were surprised and excited when we arrived at school and Miss A gave us our boarding pass. On our boarding pass we discovered the Capital City of Mexico is Mexico City.
The Mexican flag has green on the left, white in the middle and red on  the right. In the middle it has the National Coat of Arms. It is an eagle holding a snake in it's beak and perching on a cactus that has risen from a rock above a lake. Here is a picture of the Mexican flag.

We met and read all about Carlos who is from Mexico.
Did you know there are lots of villages that do not have running water or electricity? These villages also have poor education for children. Carlos has moved to a different village where he now has TV and running water.


Mexico has high mountains, deserts and rain forests. The weather can be tropical or dry depending on where abouts you are in Mexico.


Lots of the food in Mexico is made from corn. Today we got to try all different types of corn chips. They were delicious, although some were very spicy!


We also practised speaking in Spanish. That is the language they speak in Mexico. We are very lucky because Nicolas can speak Spanish. He was born in Colombia. He has taught us how to count to 10. We are very clever.


This morning we made monster pinatas. We had to follow a set of instructions that told us step by step what to do. It is very important that you read instructions carefully if you want to do it right.
